Lombardia Farm Animal Genetic Resources Cryobank (LABank)

In 2008 the Lombardia Region, in collaboration with the Institute of Agricultural Biology and Biotechnology of National Research Council (IBBA-CNR), within the framework of the project “Risorse biologiche e tecnologie innovative per lo sviluppo sostenibile del sistema agro-alimentare”, started the development of the Lombardia Farm Animal Genetic Resources Cryobank (LABank). The primary storage site is located at the Institute of Agricultural Biology and Biotechnology at the Parco Tecnologico Padano (PTP) in Lodi. For each donor semen, blood and hair samples were collected, also for future DNA screening. Actually (2013) this collection consist of 1222 semen doses collected from 5 donors of Varzese cattle breed, 282 semen doses collected from 10 donors of Brianzola sheep breed, 126 semen doses collected from 10 donors of Frisa Valtellinese, 738 semen doses collected from 11 donors of Nera di Verzasca goat breed, 129 semen doses collected from 10 donors of Orobica goat breed, for a total amount of 2497 semen doses collected from 46 donors.

For security reasons, in order two have a duplicate of each collection, the semen doses collected from each donors were divided in two different tanks as indicated in the FAO Guidelines (FAO, 2012. Cryoconservation of animal genetic resources. FAO Animal Production and Health Guidelines No. 12. Rome).
